A Mother's Persistent Faith

Take a look at some statistics I recently read about the impact mothers tend to have on the lives of their children:

  1. Children with highly involved mothers are more likely to perform better academically, including higher grades and stronger reading skills.
  2. Research from the American Psychological Association has shown that maternal warmth and affection in early childhood are strongly linked to greater emotional stability and lower anxiety later in life.
  3. According to studies from Harvard University, children who experience nurturing parental relationships, especially from mothers, tend to earn higher incomes and enjoy healthier adult relationships.
  4. A study published in the journal Pediatrics found that children whose mothers read to them regularly develop larger vocabularies and stronger literacy skills before entering school.
  5. Mothers who regularly eat meals with their children significantly reduce the likelihood of risky behaviors among teens, including substance abuse and delinquency.
  6. Children whose mothers demonstrate consistent spiritual practices are far more likely to maintain their faith into adulthood.
  7. Mothers who model perseverance and responsibility greatly influence a child’s future work ethic and personal discipline.
  8. Mothers play a major role in language development. Studies show that the amount of conversation mothers have with young children directly affects vocabulary growth and cognitive development.
  9. Maternal encouragement strongly correlates with increased confidence and willingness in children to attempt difficult tasks and pursue leadership roles.
  10. Mothers are often the primary spiritual influencers in Christian households. Multiple faith-based studies show that a mother’s consistent example of prayer and Scripture engagement deeply shapes a child’s view of God.
  11. Economists have estimated that if the labor involved in maternal caregiving was financially compensated, its economic value would total trillions of dollars annually worldwide.

The Mother in Matthew 15

One of the most touching moments in the earthly ministry of Jesus involves a desperate mother who refused to stop praying for her child.

She wasn’t famous, powerful, or even part of the nation of Israel, but she loved her daughter deeply, and she believed Jesus could help.

In many ways, this passage reminds us of the kind of strength God has often placed within mothers. Long before others recognize what they’re carrying emotionally or relationally, mothers are usually already praying, sacrificing, nurturing, encouraging, and fighting spiritual battles on behalf of the people they love.

The world doesn’t always notice those things. Even families sometimes fail to fully appreciate them in the moment. But the Lord sees every act of compassion, every exhausted prayer, every anxious tear, and every faithful effort to point the next generation toward Him.

This particular account reminds us that Jesus welcomes humble faith, and He delights to respond to those who seek Him persistently.

A Mother’s Desperate Request

Matthew tells us:

“And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, ‘Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.’” (Matthew 15:22)

The events of this passage were emotionally weighty.

This mother’s heart was broken because her daughter was suffering with some form of demonic possession. She couldn’t fix the problem herself. She had reached the end of her own strength. So she came to Jesus.

Please notice, her request wasn’t primarily for herself. It was for her child.

That kind of love reflects the heart of many mothers.

Mothers often carry burdens nobody else fully sees. They worry quietly. They pray privately. They think constantly about the wellbeing of their children, even when those children are fully grown adults.

Many mothers spend years of their lives and the majority of their prayers asking the Lord to:

  • protect their children,
  • guide their children,
  • heal their children,
  • save their children,
  • strengthen their children,
  • and draw their children closer to Christ.

Sometimes those prayers are offered joyfully. Sometimes they’re prayed through tears.

But Scripture repeatedly shows us that the Lord listens carefully to humble prayers like these.

This woman approached Jesus with reverence and faith. She called Him “Lord” and “Son of David.” Even though she was a Gentile woman, she recognized something many others failed to see. Jesus truly was the promised Savior.

Her theology may not have been fully developed, but her faith was genuine.

And genuine faith is something that has always mattered to Christ.

When God Seems Silent

With that in mind, I think the next verse might feel a little surprising…

“But he did not answer her a word.” (Matthew 15:23)

At first glance, that probably seems a little off to most of us as we read it.

This grieving mother cried out to Jesus, and yet initially He remained silent.

Many believing mothers understand what that feels like.

There are seasons when prayers seem unanswered:

  • years praying for a wandering child,
  • years praying for healing,
  • years praying for reconciliation,
  • years praying for spiritual growth in someone they love.

Sometimes it may even feel as if heaven has gone quiet.

But this passage reminds us that silence isn’t absence.  Why am I suggesting that?

Jesus heard every word this woman spoke. He saw her heart completely. His delay wasn't rejection. He was preparing to reveal something beautiful about the depth of her faith and the greatness of His mercy. This is a lesson that we’re still benefiting from today.

The disciples, meanwhile, became irritated by her persistence:

“And his disciples came and begged him, saying, ‘Send her away, for she is crying out after us.’” (Matthew 15:23)

Sadly, people don’t always understand persistent prayer.

Some may dismiss it.
Some may grow impatient with it.
Some may fail to appreciate the emotional weight faithful mothers carry.

But Jesus never despises humble dependence on Him.

The Lord isn't annoyed by the prayers of godly women. He welcomes them.

Every prayer whispered in the middle of the night, every burden carried to Him repeatedly, every plea for the next generation to know Christ, these things clearly matter to the heart of God.

Persistent Faith

Jesus then said:

“I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” (Matthew 15:24)

At this stage in His earthly ministry, Jesus was emphasizing His mission to Israel first as He was fulfilling the covenant promises that had been divinely made to them. But this woman refused to walk away discouraged.

Matthew says:

“But she came and knelt before him, saying, ‘Lord, help me.’” (Matthew 15:25)

What a simple and powerful prayer.

“Lord, help me.”

Have you ever prayed that exact prayer? I certainly have. Many mothers have prayed those exact words.

When children are struggling.
When finances are tight.
When emotions feel overwhelming.
When exhaustion settles in.
When the future feels uncertain.

“Lord, help me.”

And Scripture consistently reminds us that the Lord is near to those who humbly call upon Him.

This woman knelt before Jesus. Her posture reflected surrender, humility, and trust. She knew He alone had the authority to change her daughter’s condition.

That’s still true for each of us right now.

No parent can ultimately control the heart of a child. No mother can singlehandedly guarantee the future outcome of her family. But faithful mothers can continually bring their loved ones before Jesus.

And that matters more than many people realize.

Some of the greatest spiritual movements in history were shaped through the prayers of godly women.

Monica prayed persistently for her rebellious son Augustine for years before he eventually came to faith in Christ and became one of the most influential Christian thinkers in church history.

Susanna Wesley faithfully discipled her children in the midst of overwhelming responsibilities, and the Lord used her influence to shape future generations of gospel ministry, particularly through her sons John (a founder of the Methodist church) and Charles (the writer of "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" and many other hymns). Their ministries have outlasted their earthly lives and touched the lives of millions of people ever since.

Many mothers never fully realize the eternal impact their prayers and faithfulness may have. Some of it isn’t fully revealed during their natural lifespan.

Jesus Honors Humble Faith

Jesus then said something that initially sounds abrasive or harsh:

“It is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” (Matthew 15:26)

But the woman responded with remarkable humility and confidence:

“Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” (Matthew 15:27)

She didn’t demand anything from Jesus. She simply appealed to His mercy.

And Jesus responded:

Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you desire.” (Matthew 15:28)

Then Matthew tells us:

“And her daughter was healed instantly.” (Matthew 15:28)

Please notice what Jesus praised.

He praised her faith.

Not her status.
Not her influence.
Not her accomplishments.
Not her appearance.

Her faith.

That should truly encourage every godly woman.

The world often measures value by visibility, achievement, beauty, income, or public recognition. But the Lord sees differently.

He sees:

  • faithful prayers,
  • sacrificial love,
  • hidden acts of service,
  • quiet endurance,
  • spiritual influence,
  • and humble dependence upon Him.

Many mothers spend years serving in ways that receive little applause:

  • preparing meals,
  • driving children everywhere,
  • comforting hurting hearts,
  • teaching biblical truth,
  • listening patiently,
  • correcting lovingly,
  • praying constantly,
  • and holding families together through difficult seasons.

Several days ago, I had an hour-long conversation with a family member who is doing everything she can to meet the needs of her children and hold her family together. I know it’s been completely exhausting, and she has had to be intentional about forgiving some major offenses, but I can’t tell you how impressed I have been as I witness her love and godliness in action. At the end of our conversation I commented to her, "I have seen other women do similar things, and it always amazes me to see such godly examples, quite often among women.” I think the Lord holds a special place in His heart for them.

Others may overlook these things.

Jesus does not.

The Lord sees every unseen act of love, sacrifice, and faithfulness.

The Influence of a Godly Mother

This passage also reminds us how deeply one person’s faith can impact another generation.

This daughter experienced healing because her mother brought her need to Jesus.

Now, that doesn’t mean children are saved automatically through their parents’ faith. Each person must personally trust Christ. But Scripture repeatedly shows us that God often works powerfully through the faithful influence of parents, quite often mothers.

  • A mother’s compassion can shape a child’s understanding of love.
  • A mother’s prayers can become instruments God uses to soften hearts.
  • A mother’s example can help children see what genuine faith looks like in everyday life.

Many people who now walk faithfully with Christ can trace their spiritual foundation back to a praying mother or grandmother who consistently pointed them toward Jesus.

Even if those efforts seemed unnoticed at the time, God was working through them.  And that’s something He continues to do.

Perhaps as you're in the process of doing the best you can but not always seeing immediate results, you may feel discouraged today.

Maybe you feel exhausted.
Maybe you feel unappreciated.
Maybe you wonder if your efforts are making any difference at all.

If so, please remember this passage from Matthew's gospel.

Jesus saw this mother completely.

He heard her cries.
He honored her faith.
He responded to her prayers.
He cared about her burden.

And He cares about yours as well.

Jesus Is the True Hope of Every Family

Ultimately, this passage points us directly to Jesus Himself.

This mother couldn't rescue her daughter on her own. She needed a Savior greater than herself.

That’s true for every family.

No mother, father, pastor, teacher, or mentor can ultimately transform a human heart. Only Jesus can do that.

Christ is still the One who:

  • heals,
  • restores,
  • forgives,
  • delivers,
  • and saves.

And He still welcomes those who come to Him humbly in faith.

That’s why the prayers of godly mothers matter so much. Every sincere prayer offered to Christ places the next generation before the One who truly has power to change lives eternally.

As you pray for your children, you’re literally bringing them before Jesus like the mother in Matthew 15 was doing. You’re bringing them to Him and saying, “Lord, help me.” He loves that request, and as this passage demonstrates, He loves to say, “Yes!”

So don’t lose heart.

Your labor in the Lord is not wasted.
Your prayers are not ignored.
Your compassion is not unseen.
Your faithfulness always matters to God.

Even when others fail to notice, the Lord notices.

And just as Jesus delighted in the persistent faith of this mother in Matthew 15, He still delights in humble faith today.

Continue bringing your children, your grandchildren, your family, and your burdens to Christ.

He sees you, hears you, and cares for both you and your children.

Thank you for loving them enough to bring them before Him.
