What is the biblical path to lasting wealth?
“Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it.”
—Proverbs 13:11 (ESV)
We live in a culture that celebrates overnight success. Stories of sudden wealth—lottery winners, viral influencers, or rapid business turnarounds—capture our imagination. But while they may inspire us, Proverbs 13:11 gives a timeless warning: “Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it.”
This verse teaches us that how we gain wealth matters just as much as how much we gain. Quick riches often lack the character-building process that comes from diligence, patience, and stewardship. Wealth that comes too easily can vanish just as quickly—often because the person who receives it isn’t yet prepared to handle it wisely.
Scripture continually upholds the value of steady, faithful effort. Whether it’s the farmer planting seed, the worker saving little by little, or the servant faithfully investing their talents—God blesses the process of gradual growth. The slow path may not seem glamorous, but it is usually the most sustainable and sanctifying.
Why does wealth gained “little by little” endure? Because it’s built on wisdom, discipline, and trust in God’s timing. Every small step—saving a little, avoiding debt, giving generously, budgeting wisely—is an act of obedience. Over time, these habits shape not only our financial lives, but our character as well.
More importantly, when we live by the principle of Proverbs 13:11, we guard our hearts from greed and impulse. Hasty wealth often comes from gambling, get-rich-quick schemes, or unethical shortcuts—methods that rely on deception, or manipulation rather than integrity and faithfulness. The pursuit of quick riches can lead us away from God’s will and into spiritual danger.
But steady, God-honoring growth keeps us grounded. It forces us to rely on the Lord day by day, trusting Him to provide and bless our efforts in due time. It reminds us that our provision comes from Him, not just from our hustle. This is a lesson the Lord has been teaching me throughout the course of my adult life, and it's something I'm learning to value more and more.
Jesus taught this principle too. In Luke 16:10, He said, “One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much.” God often tests us with small things to prepare us for greater responsibility. If we’re faithful with little—gathering slowly, managing wisely, giving freely—He can entrust us with more.
So if you're feeling discouraged because your progress seems slow, take heart. God sees your faithfulness. He honors the small steps. You don’t need a windfall to be blessed—you need wisdom and patience. Over time, those who walk in God’s principles will experience increase—not just in wealth, but in wisdom, peace, and purpose.
